An Afternoon with the CPDSA in Central Park

This is a drawing from the afternoon with Liz Steel from Urban Sketchers and Veronica Lawlor from studio1482. I call this guy, (he doesn’t skate), Martini Man, because “he’s shaken, not stirred.” I drew him with consistent up and down sharp edged lines. He stands in the central area by the DJ and jiggers himself up and down, his feet firmly planted.

Amazing!

As Ronnie mentioned in her urban sketchers blog, this is Robot Boy! Enough said!

This is “Sexy” on the right. It says so on his belt!

And last but not least, this little boy was also in the center ring dancing with a hooola hoop and watching some other people dance. He was into it!

This was a fun afternoon with Liz Steele and Veronica Lawlor. We had a lot of commentary about the skaters and the dancers. It’s hard not to, they are such characters and so wonderful to draw. Thanks for a great afternoon Liz and Ronnie!

Spiritual Space for Haiti

This is a drawing I made in St. Thomas, USVI, of the Mocko Jumbies. I was born and raised on St. Thomas and “grew up” with Mocko Jumbies. They originated in Africa and came to the islands during the time of slavery. They walk on stilts and because of their great height achieve spiritual space and are the protectors and seers of their villages. Their tall legs enable them to see evil spirits coming from far away and so warn the villagers to save themselves. They are known to be the protectors of children in particular. I hope, by donating to CARE through the onedrawingaday website we can help protect the people and children of Haiti. Margaret

HALLOWEEN PARADE

Last week Veronica Lawlor and I went down to the Halloween Parade in the Village to make some drawings. We had a great time drawing together! My niece, Alison was also there with her friend, Trinka. It was one wild and crazy costume after another. Great night.

GW/NYSE

I was downtown on Wall Street today at 4:55 pm. I started to draw GW and the NYSE building and then heard the church bells ring at 5:00 pm. Now what! I expected something to happen on Wall St. at the NYSE: the walls would crumble, the roof would blow off or maybe the people who worked at the Exchange would come screaming and raving out of the building. I hadn’t heard any news about the vote in Congress and wondered what the outcome was. If it didn’t pass I figured everyone would be in a panic. Instead, Wall St. was quiet, business as usual. I think FDR said, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror, which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” He was right. And still is. It made me feel more confident to say those words to myself while drops of rain began to fall. At 5:00 it started to rain pretty hard so I left. I only got this one drawing in and had to leave. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

ST. JOHN CARNIVAL LADY

I don’t know this lady, but I love her enthusiasm! She was dancing at the St. John carnival on July 4th. It was a great parade and everybody had a great time. When I was growing up on St. Thomas my friend, Darcy, and her family would spend the entire month of August in St. John. My family and I would go over several times during the month to visit and enjoy the beauty of St. John. We had a lot of fun: endless days on the beach!

My photograph was chosen for this months edition of New York Living Magazine. This photograph was taken at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France while fellow associate, Veronica Lawlor and I were conducting a reportage class. It is “The Winged Victory of Samothrace,” carved in the 3rd Century B.C. by an unknown Greek artist. I like to call her, goddess Nike. I spent quite a bit of time looking at this incredible statue. I also have the honor of appearing with my studio 1482 associate, Kati Nawrocki, in this same issue.
